General information

Fats as well as proteins and carbohydrates belong to the three macronutrients of the human diet. As well as for proteins, the supply of certain fatty acids is essential. The primary function of fat is to be an energy supplier. Fatty acids also have a wide range of functions. They are the main component of nerve and brain cells and cell membranes of virtually all part of the body's cells. In addition, fat playes an important role in the formation of hormones, the blood fluidity, the protection of the internal organs, the processing of vitamins and many other bodily functions.

Like proteins, some fatty acids are essential for the human body.

Types of fatty acids

Fats can be divided according to their chemical structure in saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Dietary fats consist of a combination of these types of fatty acid. Basically only the polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids are essential and must be necessarily obtained from food. Nevertheless, attention should also be paid to a balanced intake of other fatty acids.

Simple and polyunsaturated fatty acids are generally considered to be, while the saturated are said to make you gain fat. This general simplification must be explained further. However, western civilization consumes way too many saturated fatty acids and a change in behavior is often advisable. More attention should be paid to unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Long or strong heating (frying, baking) produces trans fats, also known as hydrogenated fats. These are unhealthy in any case, and to avoid as far as possible.

Fat and Sport

For athletes fats are of particular importance. The consumption of fatty acids should in no way, as is often practiced and propagated, be avoided. Only during training and right after getting up, fat should be avoided, because it slows down the digestion of amino acids. Nevertheless, at all other times of the day a balanced supply of fatty acids is important for a healthy organism.

In modern sports nutrition it is recommended to consume all three typologies of fatty acids (saturated 1/3, 1/3 monounsaturated, 1/3 polyunsaturated). Certain fatty acids as omega-3 fatty acids and in particular phospholipids (e.g. lecithin) are not at all or in insufficient quantity supplied with the normal food. Therefore, supplementation with these types of fatty acids and, if necessary, functional fats (medium-chain triglycerides, conjugated linoleic acids) may be advisable.
