Functionality and mode of action of Digestive Fiber

Dietary fibres are primarily components of plant foods. They are present as so-called polysaccharides, usually long, tasteless sugar chains or, more precisely, "non-starch polysaccharides". These food components play an important role in our diet.

According to different data, the total requirement of dietary fibres is 38 g daily for men up to 50 years of age and 25 g daily for women up to 50 years of age. Above 50 years of age, amounts of 30 g for men and 21 g for women are considered adequate. Such a large amount is rarely consumed in a normal mixed diet, which is why gaps in supply regularly occur. Especially in a society that increasingly relies on processed foods, this gap is becoming more and more pronounced. The broad term dietary fibres is further subdivided into water-soluble dietary fibres and water-insoluble dietary fibres. Water-soluble dietary fibres such as inulin, pectin or oligofructose are known to ensure that food stays in the stomach longer and thus contribute to an increased feeling of satiety. The absorption of water from the dietary fibres also increases the volume of the food pulp, which leads to an increased stimulus on the intestinal wall in the intestine and thus to a stimulated intestinal movement. This stimulates digestion and reduces the retention time of the food pulp in the intestine. This mechanism, caused by the properties of dietary fibre, is the reason for the positive effects on digestion and intestinal health. Water-soluble dietary fibres are also said to play an important role in a healthy, balanced intestinal flora, a regulated blood sugar level and a normal cholesterol level.

Water-insoluble dietary fibres bind water only in very small quantities. This property primarily increases the volume of stool and thus ensures that toxins and waste products contained in the stool are excreted more quickly from the intestine.
