Short description of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a vital substance that plays the role of a prohormone. Vitamin D is usually synthesized by exposing the skin to the sun. Particularly in the winter months, sun exposure may not be sufficient to ensure an optimal vitamin D status.

This should be avoided because vitamin D is important for a normal immune system, normal calcium levels in the blood and normal muscle functions and contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

What can I expect from Vitamin D?

Studies show that vitamin D deficiency is widespread. Modern living habits and the fact that nowadays you are mainly indoors and hardly in the fresh air contribute to a vitamin D deficiency, especially in the winter months. For this reason, the German Nutrition Society (DGE e.V.) increased the reference values for vitamin D in 2012 and confirmed that it makes sense to take a vitamin D preparation to cover your needs.

If you are not sufficiently exposed to sunlight, you should also consider taking vitamin D in tablet form in order to meet the requirements of this vitamin, which is important for bones, teeth, muscle function, calcium uptake and utilization as well as the immune system.

Functionality and mode of action of Vitamin D?

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) is not actually a vitamin, but rather a prohormone that can be synthesized by the body from sunlight itself.

Vitamin D or plays a very important role in the calcium balance and bone mineralisation. Thus it contributes to a normal absorption and utilization of calcium (and phosphorus), which contributes to a normal calcium level in the blood and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

The role of vitamin D in the immune system and muscles is also important. It contributes to a normal immune system and the protection of cells from oxidative stress as well as to normal muscle function. Vitamin D also has a function in cell division, a basic condition for the formation of new muscle cells and consequently muscle building.

In addition to the endogenous synthesis from solar radiation, vitamin D can also be supplied via foods such as high-fat fish. In many countries - unfortunately less so in Europe - vitamin D is also added to foods such as milk in order to meet the needs of the population and minimise deficiency symptoms.

Peak vitamin D is high-dose vitamin D (2000 IU per tablet), which can make an important contribution to being optimally supplied with this important "vitamin" at any time of the year.
