The most important questions about vitamins & minerals

What are vitamins?

Vitamins are organic substances that our body needs to maintain vital functions. Vitamins are considered "essential", which means that we cannot produce them in sufficient quantities ourselves. Therefore we are dependent on external supply, i.e. through food, for our supply.

Vitamins do not fulfil any function as energy sources and are therefore calorie-neutral. A distinction is made between so-called water-soluble vitamins (B/C) and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). This is important for the intake. Water-soluble vitamins should always be taken with liquid and fat-soluble vitamins should always be taken with a little fat.

Vitamin D has a special position as the sun vitamin. In this case, the vitamin D requirement is not covered by food, but by sunlight on the skin.

What are minerals?

Minerals are inorganic substances that the body needs to control metabolic processes. They are sometimes involved in the water balance, immune defence, reproduction, cell division as well as in the development of muscles, bones and teeth. Minerals are also considered essential, i.e. they too must be supplied through food to cover daily requirements.

Minerals do not fulfil any function as energy sources and are therefore calorie-neutral. A distinction is made between quantities and trace elements, depending on the quantities present in the body.

Quantitative elements include the following:

  • Sodium
  • Chloride
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Magnesium

Among the trace elements are:

  • Iron
  • Iodine
  • Fluoride
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Copper
  • Manganese
  • Chromium
  • Molybdenum

Who should supplement vitamins & minerals?

Everyone has a certain need for vitamins and minerals. In some cases it can be assumed that physical activity either increases consumption or excretion. There are special intake recommendations for children, as well as for pregnant women and best agers. As a general rule, everyone should make sure that they have an adequate supply of essential food components such as vitamins and minerals.

To ensure a sufficient supply of micronutrients, the DGE (German Nutrition Society) recommends the daily consumption of 5 portions of fruit and vegetables for a normal unathletic person. If this is not ensured in the long term, or if the requirements are higher than for a normal person as described above, it is recommended that appropriate supplements are taken.

We recommend that these groups of people take a close look at their vitamin and mineral supply status:

  • Persons on a reduced diet with calorie deficiency
  • People with unbalanced diet
  • Sportsmen and women
  • Pregnant/nursing women
  • Older people
